A Unique Partnership to Advance Sustainability

The vision of a unique partnership—including city and state government, higher education, nonprofit organizations, and the business community—the Oregon Sustainability Center will secure Oregon’s position as a global leader in green building, clean technology, and environmental stewardship.

The Center will be a landmark project, drawing national and international attention to Oregon and creating demand for the region’s sustainability expertise. Oregon’s reputation as an attractive destination for green businesses and employees will grow, drawing in those who either possess or seek this expertise.

The building’s status as a living laboratory—where everyday users work among researchers dedicated to developing new practices and technologies—will provide constant opportunity for innovation. Oregon clean tech companies can test new technologies on a large scale in the Center, giving them the proving ground needed to bring products to market.

Funding Needs

$120 million is needed to bring the Center to full realization. Of this, $82 million has already been secured. The State of Oregon, acting through the Board of Higher Education and approved by the state legislature, has secured $74 million in bonds and committed an additional $3 million.  The City of Portland has offered the land and an additional $5 million in tax increment financing.

$38 million is being sought from public and private funders. Stimulus dollars, federal appropriations, foundations and individual donors are potential sources. In-kind donations of technology and building materials will make a significant contribution.
